I received my new one in about 2 weeks. They will also return the expired passport. This is important if you still have valid visas in your old one as I did. I had to carry both passports on my recent trip to China. You do NOT remove the visa and put it in the new passport. As a friend of mine found out the hard way, China can invalidate your visa and put you back on a plane home.

How long does the expedited process take for renewing a US passport?
First there are a couple of different types of expediting available. You can make an appointment at a regional facility (there are 20+ of them spread around the country). Appointment availability will vary from facility to facility) - Appointment times can range from the same day to the next day to a week to 10 days away. You will typically get the passport the same day or the next day at these facilities. You can use the acceptance agent expedited service, this will take about 3 weeks. You can use a private expediting company like my company Expedited Passports & Visas - it will take approximately 48 hours to 2 weeks depending on what level of service you want to pay for (FedEx delivery times need to be taken into account, For our 1 day service even though we receive, submit, and retrieve your passport in 1 day shipping times add to the amount of time before you receive your passport)All the options times above also assume that your application has no problems, your passport photos are perfect, you paid the right amount of fees, your birth certificate (if applying for a child or new passport) is the right type of birth certificate, and that there are no other issues with your documentation.I can’t speak for the first two options, but when a customer of ours has issues with their passport or application the passport applicant has the option of sending corrected documents via FedEx nextday delivery to expedite getting the issues resolved. It’s been my experience that 5–15% of applications on any given day have issues or the Passport Agency requests additional or corrected documents.
